He shakes his head with a smile.]
No, we're likely exactly where they wish us to be. You have to understand, this place enjoys... [how to explain this?]- little games like this. Challenges.
Come on? What's the harm of playing along, hm, gege?
[With the sheets loosely wrapped around his hips, he leans forward to grab a robe of his own, equally as sheer, though this one is a deep red.] Though I can't imagine a ceremony while wearing these. They must've left more for us.
[Not bothering with the robe, he makes his way toward the door to peek outside, the sheet sagging dangerously low on his hips. There's the sound of someone talking outside. Xie Lian likely catches the overall gist - the attendant is cheerfully encouraging them to pick out their wardrobes and continue to the chapel once dressed. Hua Cheng glances back to Xie Lian.] There are more clothes out here.
no subject
...having to do with...coupling? {He stretches out a hand to grab one of the hearts, chuckling in surprise at Hua Cheng's point of view.}
I wouldn't mind except... They've robbed me. {Now he touches his chest, his gaze pulled, insistently, towards Hua Cheng's figure. He swallows heavily and stares, completely fixated. How...beautiful.}
R-Really? {The words take longer than usual to sink in and he gives his head a shake. Hurrying to San Lang's side, he peeks over his shoulder.
And their bodies touch, a chest brushing against a bare back. Xie Lian jumps as if electrically charged, his face turning red.}
S-Sorry! Did I h-hurt you?
no subject
Robbed you? Of your bandage? [He once again sneaks a quick glance toward Xie Lian, but they nearly meet each other's gaze, which is far too bold of him while Xie Lian is in such a state of undress, so he quickly averts his eye, nodding.
He starts slightly before tensing when he feels Xie Lian press against him. If he had breath, he'd be holding it. In fact, if he wasn't already dead, he might die all over again.] No. [He finally manages, but he makes a critical mistake and once again tilts his head to look back at Xie Lian. Xie Lian, whose warmth he can still feel like a phantom against his skin. Xie Lian, who's blushing, who's inches away from him. And he can't help but stare, mesmerized. The man is truly so stunningly beautiful.] No, you haven't.
no subject
Oh. {He opens his mouth to ask who San Lang has kissed and touched, but it's not his business.} I'm glad you're strong. Promise me you won't let anyone take advantage of you?
{His temper would definitely be awoken if that happened.}
...ah no. The... The necklace. {Does Hua Cheng not know of it?} Your ashes.
{Take everything he owns and he won't bat an eye, but that... That is one true treasure.}
I will find it. They must be keeping it safe somewhere, right? {Thoughts scatter like a wave of startled butterflies at the briefest of touches. San Lang's back is...strong and bare. The urge to brush his fingertips down the other man's spine, to kiss his broad shoulders is so powerful that he feels his breath catch. He can't meet Hua Cheng's gaze. How shameful of him to think that way!}
D-Do you want me to help you get...mm..dressed? I can brush your hair or...
{Oh, great. Now he's babbling!}
no subject
A part of him feels a level of guilt for playing along with the games, but doing so meant a higher status, better accomodations, and, ultimately, he believed, a way to return to Xie Lian, but now they both needed to get back... or did they? Hua Cheng certainly wanted to improve his position here, but that could be done with Xie Lian now. Ah, but wasn't he being presumptuous in thinking Xie Lian would ever debase himself like that. A problem to tackle later. For the moment, he's once again caught by surprise.
He had long thought about, dreamed about, giving his ashes to Xie Lian. The moment had played out so many times, so many different ways, in his mind.]
When? You recall me gifting it to you? [This is confusing. While he could fairly easily accept that Xie Lian had seen through his San Lang disguise with ease, he certainly would have remembered something as important as giving Xie Lian his ashes.] Gege, what is the last thing you recall?
Uh... yes, they'll likely start getting impatient. We can continue this discussion while we get ready. We should pick outfits... [He sounds a little distracted though, unable to think of much beyond Xie Lian combing his fingers through his hair.
At the clothing rack, he quickly hones in on a red number. It's something that looks like it might be more appropriate for a bride, but their options are limited and the style of the garment at least looks familiar and traditional to him.] Once we're done with their game, we should buy clothes for gege. I have some money.
no subject
I...I understand. {Thinking about the lost ashes is both easier and harder. Of all the oaths he has made in his lifetime, that was one he had been determined to keep. Now Hua Cheng's very existence is in the hands of another!}
Of course. You gave them to me when you left the shrine in Puqi. {Xie Lian draws his hair over his shoulder and smooths the brush through it.} The...ah... The Mid-Autumn Festival. I attended it in Heaven and... I think you must have done something for me.
{Now he looks down at his feet, his ears burning. The lights are burned into his mind and nothing has ever been lovelier in the night sky.
Hua Cheng's movement has him looking up again and he moves to the clothing rack too.}
It looks like I will be dressing up again. I hope this one is looser; I felt like I was going to tear the robe I wore to meet the ghost groom.
{The offer humbles him further and he chuckles.}
Don't worry about me. I just need one set of decent robes.
no subject
When I left the shrine? I only went to get wood for the door... [He tilts his head, looking confused. Mid-Autumn?] I did something for you? [While he doesn't remember doing anything, he can put two and two together and take an educated guess as to what he may have done. He smirks, chuckling softly.] I can only imagine the upset.
[He nods.] Lucky me. You look good in red. You should wear it more often. Hm... Or maybe not. Maybe it's better when it's a special treat.
[He nods again.] Of course, gege.
[He makes his way back into the room, which at least affords them some privacy to change, and pulls on the ornate red robes. He certainly wouldn't want to ruin whatever Xie Lian did to his hair, even if it was nothing more than a lopsided ponytail.]
no subject
San Lang, so much has happened! You left me at Puqi Shrine and invited me to your Ghost City. I went and -
It's marvelous. {The excitement in his voice is hardly feigned! But he stops himself from rambling, forcing himself to breathe.} In Heaven there is a contest each Autumn to see who has the most lanterns dedicated to them. Usually the winner is His Majesty, but I... I was the winner this year. The light was tremendous and...beautiful.
{Who else would have done that for him?} San - {He pulls a red robe into his arms and eyes the proportions.}
I d-don't know about that. The color suits San Lang far better.
{But he would wear red for Hua Cheng. He steps back inside the room too, moving over to a hidden corner to get dressed. The lopsided ponytail will soon be dealt with - once he is in his robes. He approaches the other man and picks up the brush, running his fingers through Hua Cheng's dark hair as he loosens the ribbon.}
I can do better this time. {...maybe?}
no subject
Of course, the competition of who has the most lanterns amongst the heavenly officials is famous. It's my understanding that there are many heated rivalries. [He smiles to himself, knowing that he'd pulled it off and likely upset many in the process. He very much approves.
With the loose knowledge of how close they'd apparently become, he's less shy about letting his gaze wander over to Xie Lian and linger as the man changes. And he's even less inclined to hide that he'd been watching when Xie Lian turns around to make his way in his direction.] There's really no need to be modest. We are about to be wed. [He's teasing, of course, tone playful and coy, but there's a lining of truth in it. He watches as Xie Lian approaches before taking a seat on the floor gracefully so that Xie Lian might sit on the edge of the bed and easily reach his hair. He closes his eye for a moment as pleasant chills run down his spine at the feeling of Xie Lian's fingers in his hair.] Whatever you do will be wonderful. [There's absolutely no doubt whatsoever in his voice. To him, it truly doesn't matter what the final outcome is; that Xie Lian's fingers are carding through his hair means he's already gotten exactly what he wants.]
no subject
So you do know of it. {Unsurprising given Hua Cheng's history. What Xie Lian doesn't fully understand is why the ghost would go to such great lengths for him.} I don't suppose you know why you...made so many lanterns for me? I certainly didn't ask it of you. I'm accustomed to losing and that's what everyone expected anyway.
{The other gods had belittled him, but so? His words dry up when he notices that he is being watched. He slips into the robe - more a dress, honestly - and flushes so hard that he feels like he might catch on fire!}
...is that where we're going? {Well alright. Xie Lian honestly can't imagine marrying anyone else! The idea pleases him, leaving him warm and happy as he puts up his hair. Finally, he goes to his San Lang and picks up the fallen brush. He settles on the edge of the bed and first slides his fingers through the other man's silky soft hair. The brush follows and he bites his lip to keep himself from kissing the very top of the ghost's head. It really seems like a good spot for kisses!}
You make a stunning groom. Tell me about your perfect bride.
no subject
[He can't help the way his lips curl, unable to keep the amused smile off his face.] As for why... I have a guess. [He leaves it ambiguous, dancing around actually giving an answr. But wasn't it obvious? Xie Lian deserved every prayer lantern. He deserved far more than Hua Cheng could ever give him.]
Judging by the decor and the clothing they want us to wear, that's my guess. [Xie Lian doesn't sound reluctant in the least bit, however, Hua Cheng is still quick to add-] I'm sure it's just another one of their games, though. No need to worry.
[His eyebrows raise at the question, though, and he both wishes he could see Xie Lian's expression while also being grateful that Xie Lian can't easily see his at the moment.] Hmm... My perfect bride? Someone who... knows who they are. Who can be headstrong and walk their own path in spite of what others might think. Kind. Caring. Even if the care they show others might sometimes make me feel jealous, I truly have no reason to worry. Someone gentle and beautiful, but also strong. Someone who... makes me smile and laugh.
What about you, gege? Have you ever given thought to such things?
no subject
His eyes widen at the comment about having a "guess" (about the lanterns) and he leans in, eager to hear.
Only to be teased!} San Lang. {Xie Lian huffs softly and gently bats the ghost's arm. He looks down at himself as he tends to Hua Cheng's hair, his fingers mindlessly adding a braid to the ghost's style.}
I...wasn't worried. {If it's San Lang, he doesn't mind marrying him. At all.
He should think about that more.}... {He fumbles and bites his lip, carefully tying off the braid. Hua Cheng is all of those things he said about his, potential, wife. Xie Lian feels a strange tightening in his stomach and he has to calm himself before he can answer.} San Lang deserves someone like that. Someone like him. Did... Did you ever know someone like that?
{The ponytail he manages this time at least isn't crooked and he uses a red ribbon to hold it in place.}
I wouldn't want to curse anyone with my luck. If I think about having someone like that... They have to be strong. And kind. I don't know how else they will put up with me if they aren't forgiving.
