JOB POSTING ONE! BIG PAYOUT FOR EASY WORK!
I am a pharmacist looking for some brave adventurers willing to go down into the dungeon and collect dongle flower milk for me. I need at least 10 bottles! This is an important ingredient in one of my popular prescriptions. I am not athletic enough to go get it myself and my supplies are running low.
Please deliver all dongle flower milk to the medical shop in the northwest corner of the market. Please note, I need FULL bottles. Do not skimp or I won't pay!
JOB POSTING TWO! HELP A WOMAN'S GROWING BUSINESS!
I am a young lady looking to expand my make-up business. I heard rumors that there's water in the dungeon that could make an AMAZING base for make-up products. But it sounds like it's super scary in there and I don't want to go. Please, someone, help!
You can bring all bottles of dungeon water to the make-up booth in the southeast corner of the market. I'm willing to pay in chips or trade some of my current products. My face masks and nail polishes are really good!
JOB POSTING THREE! PLEASE DON'T ASK WHY!
Hello. I need many dungeon slime cores, so I am looking for everyone and anyone willing to go slime hunting and gather some for me. We can negotiate pay based upon the number of slime cores brought. Do not inquire what the slimes or their cores are needed for.
Please bring all slime and slime core deliveries to back door of the Dried and Baked Sundries shop. Thank you!
JOB POSTING FOUR! I WANT COLLECTABLES!
If you're going into the dungeon, I want collectables. If you find that fabled treasure room, bring me back something cool and shiny. I'm willing to pay good money! I don't care what it is as long as it's hard to get and I can brag to my friends about it.
You can find me drinking in the tavern. I'll be wearing expensive velvet and a tiny hat with a feather.

That’s no way to start an adventure. You need to think positive!
[ Excuse him for leaning fully into the bit; he affects that booming orator’s voice, brimming with golden confidence, putting a hand out ahead of them. ] Look at us! Setting off into the unknown, a pair of heroes embarking on an adventure in search of untold treasures!
What’s not to like?
no subject
[ He feels that hand holding his own though. Phainon is a protector. Probably more fiercely so than even some of the people Cale had surrounded himself with. Not that Cale believes that Phainon would go into a full on destructive tantrum should something happen to him - that's something he only expects of Raon.
Though Phainon is just being dramatic. Cale is tugging the bigger guy along, as if the oration is keeping them from moving forward. ]
Heroes? We are heroes? No, I don't think that really applies. Not to me, anyway.
no subject
[ That he gets into trouble, that is. ]
… Come on, Cale. It wouldn’t kill you to indulge your friend and play along, just once?
[ He’s grins hopefully. Who would say no to this face?
Besides a wet cat of a lout. ]
no subject
[ His lip quirks. He will play along though. How can Cale not be partially giddy with the thought that they could find treasure at the end of this? ]
Fine. Have it your way. This "hero" is going to claim the largest share of the spoils then.
[ SMILE! ]
no subject
[ Rude!
It might be, but Phainon only teases like this when he’s comfortable that he can take it. If it lands wrong, he’ll adjust. It’s just his way.
The bridge groans as their steps resound against the wooden planks. He glances warily over the edge. ]
no subject
[ Cale will 100% find a way to carry as much treasure and spoils as he can. Either through using his wind powers ( when Phainon isn't around ) or by finding something that will work as a bag or sack. It's going to happen.
Phainon is good people. Though he could stand to be a little more vocal about his own desires - apart from trying to make Cale promise not to use his Ancient Powers, that is. There has to be a selfish bone in that body somewhere, right?
The bridge... Doesn't feel particularly stable. Cale holds that hand tighter as his other latches onto the rope keeping it all together. ]
I hope you aren't afraid of heights.
no subject
Phainon looks up. ]
Afraid of heights? [ Cale's gripping his hand awfully tight... is he? ] No, I was just thinking.
Have you ever imagined what it might feel like to fall from a great height?
[ Phainon's going to feel terrible about opening his mouth if the answer turns out to be 'no' combined with a concerned side-eye. Pre-empting this with a (slightly nervous) chuckle, he adds: ] Not that I'm looking to find out!
no subject
Still, when the question is asked? He shakes his head. ]
No, I do my best not to. Raon would never let something like that happen anyway.
[ The little baby dragon that is also his son. However, that also implies that Cale is usually at great heights on a regular basis. ]
I was just curious because if we do fall, would you allow me to catch us?
no subject
There's no need for you to use that power when I'm around, [ Now he's starting to feel like they're tempting fate. ] ...Have you mentioned Raon before?
[ If he has, Phainon's typically excellent memory must be failing him; the bridge sways again, and this time he stops, putting a hand not to the bridge, but to Cale as though he means to steady him.
He actually looks a little concerned. It hadn't been this fussy the last time he crossed this bridge. ]
no subject
Oh my. What a knight in shinning armor you are.
[ Though Cale has mo idea why Phainon is still stuck on not wanting him to use his Ancient Powers. It’s fine now. He can use them without coughing blood
unless over-extending himselfso what is the problem? Phainom won’t have to worry about Cale’s condition with that necklace so why the continued concern? He tsks. ]
I have mentioned him, though not by name. He is my youngest.
[ And Cale steps forward, but in the process? His foot goes right through that wooden plank. ]
no subject
The bridge ropes snap.
His stomach drops as gravity pulls at them both, the solid planks beneath his feet suddenly as supportive as sheets of paper.
Still, he has one hand on Cale, and those fingers close around a fistful of shirt he knows won’t hold for long. His other arm swings around to catch him around the waist instead as they begin to fall.
The other hand releases his shirt, but those fingers clutch at Phainon’s chest, the white material of his chiton dimpling under his fingertips. ] -No!
no subject
It’s in those moments that time seems to slow. Cale can feel Phainon’s fingers on his shirt as the bridge snaps and everything gives out beneath them. And then there’s the arm, warm and heavy around his waist and pulling him back against Phainon’s larger frame.
Now things return to normal speed, their rapid decent kicking up red strands of hair. Cale can hear Phainon’s shout as he tries, himself, to adjust their positions. There’s no time to think, even as he feels Phainon’s body heating up. Cale is again, trying to shoot a hand out towards where they are falling, loud swears on his tongue and about ready to used the Sound of Wind -
Because what other option js there? ]
no subject
Wind slows to a whisper when a moment ago it lashed their descent.
Right at eye level with Cale, a cluster of little white flowers struggle to grow on a tiny ledge in the crevice, their pale petals glowing in the golden radiance pouring down from just above and behind Cale. Haloed by a sunlike disc, his pale hair drenched in its solar light, Phainon opens his eyes, luminous and golden. ]
Don’t.
no subject
His eyes only open when he feels they are slowing, blinking a little. Cale has no clue what's going on here. What the actual fuck is going on? Phainon can't fly -
Can he?
The "don't" has his attention snapping like a whip back to Phainon's eyes. His own widen in response to the subtle and not so subtle changes. Cale does stop, however, looking a little bewildered. ]
The hell...?
[ NO, SERIOUSLY. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? ]
no subject
Nothing about the rest of him looks practical, either; his clothes replaced by a dark bodysuit, half melted off a body hardened like pottery fired in a kiln, molten gold glowing in great cracks in his sculpted torso. Shards of gold protrusions jut through. The look in his glowing eyes is knowing and complicated, and when he closes them to tip back his head, they ascend to the ledge where they met; he seeks to guide Cale to safety before joining them.
Under his boots, the grass begins to wither and scorch. ]
You don’t look to be hurt, [ he observes with relief, ] I told you-
[ Still, a hell of a change. ]
no subject
He still hangs on, of course. There's no reason for him to all of the sudden start to distrust the other. Though landing on the ledge like they do - ]
What is this?
[ No, Phainon. You do not get to lecture him here. This is something that doesn't actually look altogether pleasant. ]
no subject
Instead, he responds with curiosity. Phainon's lips part in silence, the sizzle as the heat radiating from his body evaporates the moisture of the grass beneath his feet, the pop as dry earth begins to bake rises to his ears, and he gently nudges Cale back, away from the ledge's edge, and away from him. ]
This is... fury, [ And power, wrought bloody, ] And it isn't meant for you.
no subject
Eventually his russet eyes meet the burning, molten gold of Phainon's. Fury, he says. Cale can see that there is much anger to be had within Phainon if this is what fury looks like. Something that breaks him apart and yet -
Looks so torn. An expression of despair and sadness. At least that's how it appears to him. ]
Turn around.
[ Cale wants to see it. Fully. ]
no subject
No, [ his voice drags past his teeth like over gravel, low and dry, ] I’ve made enough of a spectacle.
[ This form is not the hope of Amphoreus but its rage, hollowed out by vengeance and brittle. Even its radiance can only burn. ] Hah, this broken body could still save one, at least… if only from the inconvenience of broken bones.
[ Phainon glances over the edge, half turning aside lest he clip him with a wing. ] It looked deeper from the bridge, but now I see it’s hardly threatening at all.
no subject
I wouldn't have let us hit the bottom, Phainon. [ Blunt, to the point. Because no, Cale wouldn't have and Phainon knows this. ] Though I imagine being like this, there's not much that would seem threatening.
[ He's standing there, arms crossed over his chest and very clearly displeased. ]
no subject
...
[ His golden eyes drop, darting away as he thinks, their glow still slightly visible behind his eyelids as he closes them through a slow inhale. ]
Even so. It... pains me, [ he says, as though mildly surprised, ] To see you suffer. [ He hasn't forgotten how this feels, after all. Some of that he could easily owe to being the Phainon of the latest recurrence, and yet... in his short time here, he wonders if the resort's dampening of the furious fire that burns within his breast might have turned back the cruel hands of time a little. ]
What are you thinking, Cale. [ That look on his face... he feels a little guilty. ]
no subject
He takes a breath through his nose and breathes it out in a sigh as Phainon asks him what he's thinking. ]
I'm thinking that we're both equally stubborn. [ That's one part of it. ] We're not going to see eye to eye on this, because we feel similarly about the other.
[ Meaning that Cale does, in fact, not like the idea of Phainon suffering. Which he clearly is, even if it's not physical pain. ]
What I was starting to think is that this form of yours showcases some of the things that you hide behind your smiles.
no subject
Cale's words bid Phainon to look at him with slightly widened eyes, lips parted. ]
This shattered, burnt effigy? [ he exhales a mirthless little laugh, ] Your powers of observation cut like knives. ...Do I truly seem so broken to you?
no subject
That's the second time you've referred to this form of yours as broken. I don't think I said that at all. Is that how you see yourself, Phainon?
[ A burnt effigy seems to be accurate though. Or at least the effigy part. So when Cale drops his arms, it is to invade Phainon's personal space once again. Whether Phainon allows this or not is no concern of Cale's in this moment. Cale's fingers are tracing Phainon's form, right above one of those places where gold shines through. ]
What I see is someone using himself as fuel for others. You called it your fury, but I wonder why your fury looks more like resignation or sadness. It seems more pained to me. As though you're losing parts of yourself in the process.
no subject
He shakes his head, firmly. Whether he means to reiterate that he shouldn't touch him, or if he's answering his question, Phainon doesn't specify. Perhaps he means both. That would be a lie, and he won't speak dishonestly.
A muscle jumps in his jaw, as his teeth clench; his blood is already aflame, but the heat growing in tandem is an ember of desire, fanned to life by proximity and contact. The longer he uses this power, the darker his suit grows, and now it lies pitch-black behind the leathery armor that encases his body.
Like a candle snuffed by an errant gust of wind, hair that glowed gold in the radiance of a searing halo returns to snowy white; his skin returns to its whole, pliant state, and the heat that radiated from him like a furnace retreats. His head sags from broad shoulders, but he stands firm, wings vanishing as though ignited flash paper, disappearing into vapor and light. ]
So it must be, [ he exhales shakily, ] So it has... always been.
