JOB POSTING ONE! BIG PAYOUT FOR EASY WORK!
I am a pharmacist looking for some brave adventurers willing to go down into the dungeon and collect dongle flower milk for me. I need at least 10 bottles! This is an important ingredient in one of my popular prescriptions. I am not athletic enough to go get it myself and my supplies are running low.
Please deliver all dongle flower milk to the medical shop in the northwest corner of the market. Please note, I need FULL bottles. Do not skimp or I won't pay!
JOB POSTING TWO! HELP A WOMAN'S GROWING BUSINESS!
I am a young lady looking to expand my make-up business. I heard rumors that there's water in the dungeon that could make an AMAZING base for make-up products. But it sounds like it's super scary in there and I don't want to go. Please, someone, help!
You can bring all bottles of dungeon water to the make-up booth in the southeast corner of the market. I'm willing to pay in chips or trade some of my current products. My face masks and nail polishes are really good!
JOB POSTING THREE! PLEASE DON'T ASK WHY!
Hello. I need many dungeon slime cores, so I am looking for everyone and anyone willing to go slime hunting and gather some for me. We can negotiate pay based upon the number of slime cores brought. Do not inquire what the slimes or their cores are needed for.
Please bring all slime and slime core deliveries to back door of the Dried and Baked Sundries shop. Thank you!
JOB POSTING FOUR! I WANT COLLECTABLES!
If you're going into the dungeon, I want collectables. If you find that fabled treasure room, bring me back something cool and shiny. I'm willing to pay good money! I don't care what it is as long as it's hard to get and I can brag to my friends about it.
You can find me drinking in the tavern. I'll be wearing expensive velvet and a tiny hat with a feather.

still, getian seems peaceful. kind. charitable if he was so inclined to provide goods and services for free. ]
I don't need to know about my fate.
[ of his own future, konoe's sure. would he be able to dissuade getian from doing this in the first place? if anything--- it's anything else he can glean by simply looking at him that piques his curiosity. would he be able to comprehend the nature of konoe's past, and the past of those who impacted him? ]
So whatever you see... it probably won't be interesting to anyone.

he is still and silent for a moment before nodding. really, this is konoe’s choice. he is not going to force anything onto him that he does not want. it would truly be a cruelty, to curse someone with knowledge of their own fate when they wished to remain ignorant of it.
the first response he offers to the ribika is his smile growing a bit wider, a shade warmer. )
I do not think there is a single person whose bones I have read and found uninteresting. Life itself is too much a fascination and a miracle, wouldn’t you agree?
( he dips his head, as if in a small bow. )
I will do nothing you do not wish me to do, my young, cat-like friend. Though, if you would agree to let me read your bones, I promise to you that I will not speak of your path ahead… only what the appearance of your bones tells me about the road you have walked to get here.

but without him, konoe feels lost.
still! he is not fully dependent on the other cat. no, this one can still stand on his own two feet. he nervously smooths over his tunic, adjusts his cloak... if anything he fits quite well in this oddly familiar environment. ]
You better be prepared to keep your promise.
[ it's not a threat. it's a warning. though konoe is now quietly looking himself over. ]
Do... do I need to show you a bone or... how does this work?
no subject
( bone reading is the sacred and ancestral arcane skill of his people. getian treats it with great gravity and great pride. there had been times in his past that he used it more flippantly, espying the features and fates of strangers because he’d known he would do so as a neutral observer with no intention on interfering. since entering the world of men and building relationships with others, though, he has trained himself not to read them unless they agreed to allow it. it could amount to a dangerous power imbalance, if he knew more about a stranger than they could know about him at a glance.
he has, of course, slipped up a few times in this conviction… a bird’s curiosity does get the better of him, sometimes. but, for the most part, he is very careful.
he laughs gently at the question, raising one wing to hide his mouth as he does so. )
Ah… I am beginning to see where a miscommunication was made with some others, who came by my booth earlier.
( he hadn’t understood when they had gotten anxious after he described what his arcane skill was and what he could do. did they, like konoe, think he would need them to suffer physical damage in order to perform his reading? something to keep in mind for the future, certainly… )
No, you need do nothing but stand there, as you are. Beneath skin and past flesh, I can see the features of your bones as easily as I see you now, once my arcane skill is active.
( and as he says this, he activates it. there is perhaps a strange sensation emanating from the Miemeng bird’s eyes, one pale and one dark, a reflection of Yin and Yang. his gaze sweeps over the cat, seeming particularly interested in his shoulders, the absent arm, over the front of his chest, even down to the small crook in his tail. he hums, the sound pensive and thoughtful, though perhaps there’s even an element of surprise in it as well.
my, my. this young cat has suffered much, in such a short life. but… from the ashes of great pain, fear, and danger, he has risen as a phoenix might to achieve great victory as well. emotional catharsis. a strong, fervent, and abiding love. as getian looks at him, he feels as though he sees a life inversely opposite to his own. getian has lived a very long life, but he would so so many of those years—decades, centuries, even—had been relatively… uneventful. he had suffered less pain, yes, but he had also achieved little of the same exultation as well.
after a long moment, he nods. ) And you would think yourself… uninteresting? ( he chuckles again, shaking his head. as he does so, there’s a rustle of movement; a long, thin wand carved of bone (the final “success,” with the others taken to get to that point resting on the table) stirs and removes itself from his belt, levitating upwards into the space between them. )
Do you permit I point out to you what I see?
no subject
but when it's over, he recognizes it... was he holding his breath the entire time because it feels like he did. he takes a full one before opening his eyes, the slightest hint of a frown causing his brow and lips to both curve melancholy slopes. ]
I don't think I'm uninteresting.
[ probably to someone who has no idea... even watching what's happened to him, can getian relate? at all?? konoe can only see what's in front of him. he can only judge based on what his senses give him right now, not in the past or in the future. also doesn't help that this is a kind of bird he's never met before in his life, but he's certainly not a devil. not some kind of monster bent on bending konoe to his will. ]
I've never wanted to be interesting.
[ that sounds about right, doesn't it? if only things were different. but if they were, he wouldn't have met asato. he wouldn't have discovered anything about his past. about his father, about his nemesis. that story would've never been told. in a way, it's a story that should go up in flames. let it eventually be lost to time so no one would understand the machinations of a sorcerer and a bard...
but now that's impossible, isn't it? ]
If you wish... you can say whatever you want.
[ as long as he doesn't judge him harshly. if there's any sense of curiosity, of wanting to be validated, it shows in that tail of his. how it flexes and twitches, sways in a relaxed manner... ]
no subject
and he’s not always perfect in that, but… he likes to think he’s improving.
he hums, thoughtful. ) Such is the burden of fate.
( it’s clear in the young ribika’s bones that he could have never lived uneventfully, even if he did not end up so deeply marked by events that had shaped his entire world. that having been said, though, simply reading his bones doesn’t make getian an expert on sisa and the apocalypse it had faced. only able to see the marks made by events that have already happened, he is more like an archaeologist, feeling at details of those events that might be entirely incorrect depending on his assumptions.
he decides to start simply. ) Like my eyes, your voice has power. ( the thin bone wand raises to point at konoe’s jaw, tracing down the line of his throat. ) Mandible, cervical vertebrae… hyoid. Each bare markings not unlike those left by arcana, though different in a way I have never seen before.
( but in a way he thinks he understands. he buffs his allies in battle as well, after all. )
These are not the only features I see upon your spine. Down the vertebrae to, here, your ribs, ( he points out the line of the bottommost of konoe’s ribcage. ) marks that are… forced. They have been left here by something without rather than within. Dark, insidious… a curse?
( the reason it’s not so easy to read is because, ) One you have rid yourself of. Or… ( he suddenly sounds unsure. the wand traces up konoe’s ribcage towards his heart, then towards the shoulder of his missing arm. the Miemeng bird cocks his head slightly to one side. clearly, he is not omniscient; he is like a scholar piecing out meaning from an ancient text while only knowing half of the letters. )
One that you shared.
( he folds his wings in front of him, briefly resting his chin on the place that might’ve otherwise been his “wrists.” ) Just as you share a great love. Such a potent connection shapes us as well, down to our very foundations…
( though—that doesn’t seem to be the only entanglement he can see. the other is harder to put into words. )
no subject
even if the bird is well articulated, and worst of all? correct.
he shakes. or maybe, he trembles. an icy grip ensnares his heart. he swallows thickly, trying to maintain his composure. do konoe's bones really tell his entire story? can they really describe the power of a sanga that accurately? his voice does hold power, unfocused yet incredibly potent, though he hasn't used it in what feels like a very long time. could he even use it here? he's not sure. what kind of place could be that dangerous as to rival his home?
but for getian to discern his curse, the one that has left his body permanently scarred, does make him feel uneasy. perhaps the uneasiest he could possibly feel; how else could anyone tell that he was the recipient of an affliction like that one?
it's why he takes a step back, hands raised up to his own chest, as if they would shield getian from looking any further. ]
That's... enough.
[ it's not that the truth hurts, that he wishes to forget all that's happened--- that alone would be a betrayal of a promise. still. those wounds are all still raw. what he does know is that getian is... not an enemy. he can't be sure if he could call him a friend. but he's certainly someone he couldn't lie to. ]
no subject
he isn’t jarred from the near-trancelike state until the young man steps back, raising his hands to his chest as if to recoil. getian stills, falling silent even before konoe asks him to. for a moment, he just seems… puzzled, but then a crease of genuine concern creases his brow. he’d seen the young cat to be nervous of his reading, yes, but he hadn’t actually expected him to be so… affected. and negatively so. a thorn of guilt pricks at him, like burrs tangled in the layers of his feathers. when performing a reading for someone, he only ever wanted to help them with understanding, enlightenment—he never wanted to cause distress.
but getian is not particularly well-equipped to offer consolation. he had lived for a very long time alone. this is perhaps why he hadn’t anticipated this outcome at all; if he had more experience and skill with people, it would have been easier to see the signs for. )
What I’ve said has troubles you… I apologize.
( the wand returns to his side, tucking itself into its place in his belt, at his waist.
he is silent for a long moment, deeply pensive, before he continues. )
If you would permit me to say… There are many things I do not know, but I do know the nature of bones. They are our basis, our very structure. Therefore, the experiences of our lives write themselves upon them, as they do upon our memories and our hearts. If this frightens you, however, know that what is written in bone is not written in stone. As living creatures, we can always change. It is often a long journey, and it is never easy. ( his eyes lid closed for a moment before he gives konoe a small nod. ) But it is always possible.
