JOB POSTING ONE! BIG PAYOUT FOR EASY WORK!
I am a pharmacist looking for some brave adventurers willing to go down into the dungeon and collect dongle flower milk for me. I need at least 10 bottles! This is an important ingredient in one of my popular prescriptions. I am not athletic enough to go get it myself and my supplies are running low.
Please deliver all dongle flower milk to the medical shop in the northwest corner of the market. Please note, I need FULL bottles. Do not skimp or I won't pay!
JOB POSTING TWO! HELP A WOMAN'S GROWING BUSINESS!
I am a young lady looking to expand my make-up business. I heard rumors that there's water in the dungeon that could make an AMAZING base for make-up products. But it sounds like it's super scary in there and I don't want to go. Please, someone, help!
You can bring all bottles of dungeon water to the make-up booth in the southeast corner of the market. I'm willing to pay in chips or trade some of my current products. My face masks and nail polishes are really good!
JOB POSTING THREE! PLEASE DON'T ASK WHY!
Hello. I need many dungeon slime cores, so I am looking for everyone and anyone willing to go slime hunting and gather some for me. We can negotiate pay based upon the number of slime cores brought. Do not inquire what the slimes or their cores are needed for.
Please bring all slime and slime core deliveries to back door of the Dried and Baked Sundries shop. Thank you!
JOB POSTING FOUR! I WANT COLLECTABLES!
If you're going into the dungeon, I want collectables. If you find that fabled treasure room, bring me back something cool and shiny. I'm willing to pay good money! I don't care what it is as long as it's hard to get and I can brag to my friends about it.
You can find me drinking in the tavern. I'll be wearing expensive velvet and a tiny hat with a feather.

My materia, yes. [ tseng knows matoba remembers them being mentioned, and now he's had a demonstration of at least one. although, to be fair, assess is a very boring spell to watch from the outside; if tseng thought the thunder materia would do anything he would demonstrate it too. maybe at a later time.
much more interesting to watch than the casting of an assess spell is the way matoba's shadow puppets split off and slip away into the edges of their narrowing perimeter. tseng certainly can't begrudge matoba an attempt at finding another way to stop the mechanism that's encroaching on them, although he doesn't have high expectations that it will work—that would be too easy.
tseng's lips twitch in a humorless smile. ] I already know what I would give you.
[ his gaze rests on matoba's face for a long moment, his expression thoughtful. everything with matoba is a calculus, setting their interactions on the arms of a scale and then making moves to rectify when the weight tips them one way or another. always in balance, always sharply aware of the debt owed and never willing to go too far into the red. it's odd, perhaps, that this of all times is when tseng achieves clarity. ]
—Ah, [ he says, the small sound an expression of some internal revelation. ] I see.
[ he tilts his head. the secret tseng has on the tip of his tongue is a ruinous one, but it is the only way that they get out of this alive. matoba, he thinks, would rather be skewered than risk giving tseng the leverage. ]

It isn't that I can't think of anything at all. I'd just hate to insult you with a softball.
[Beyond that: it'd be uncouth to demand Tseng point-blank to show his hand first, but disadvantageous and weak-willed for Matoba to show his own; a difficult conundrum to navigate, and he knows that Tseng can see all the angles just the same. A war of attrition like this can only be settled by one of them simply willing to stick out their necks. Matoba doesn't necessarily mind being the one to test when he thinks he's going to get something worth it in return. But...]
[Tseng has been very insistent on the point of trust for some time now. For Matoba, the calculus is this: if he is certain that Tseng can see all the same variables that he can, then what purpose do his attempts to appeal to Matoba with pleas of trust serve? For he doesn't believe that Tseng thinks so little of him as to be fooled into dropping his guard, and neither of them are the sort to put pleasure before work.]
[No... Well, if he didn't expect him to flinch, absolutely, then there wouldn't be very much point to making those appeals to begin with, would there?]
[Matoba gazes back at Tseng's expression of revelation unmoving like an alleycat as the gears continue to turn. The grinding sound of the spiked walls is beginning to drag closer, its clicking nearly in sync with the turning of his thoughts.]
...And it's a little cheap to just ask you what you'd like to know, hm. What a pickle.

matoba says nothing for a long moment, but that silence speaks volumes. in his role as the head of his clan, tseng imagines that it would have been an unacceptable risk for matoba to offer too much to too many without something to hold as collateral against exploitation. spread thin and in a tenuous position, with too many asking too much of him and offering not nearly enough in return. no wonder he is unwilling to give of his innermost self without a guarantee of reciprocation.
and doesn't tseng know what it's like to be a man whose value has always been in what he can offer others? hadn't he been just like matoba, once upon a time, before verdot let him put a bullet in his and his daughter's brains with no guarantee but faith that tseng would live to undo it?
maybe the piece that tseng had been missing, in their previous discussions, was this: the fact that matoba let him set the terms of their agreements, their transactions, was in its own way a demonstration of matoba's trust. he had let his own experiences and his own emotions get in the way of his understanding of who matoba is. the realization is as embarrassing as it is elucidating.
better for him to take the decision out of matoba's hands, tseng thinks. he glances to the side, where the spikes are moving incrementally closer. he could reach out and touch the tip of one now if he wanted, without even really stretching for it. ]
I'll start, [ he says. his eyes flick back to meet matoba's. ] Since it's my fault we're in this situation to begin with.
[ which is true, kind of. it was tseng who invited matoba to join him in his exploration of the dungeon. no guarantee that if he hadn't done so, matoba wouldn't have landed in this pit regardless... but if nothing else it provides an excuse for tseng to offer his "emotional vulnerability" first, putting them back on even ground.
but how to start? ]
...I admit I let my emotions get the better of me, [ is what tseng decides on. ] I focused on the question of whether or not you trust me because it was easier than admitting to myself that I have feelings for you that make me care how you feel about me in turn. And then I unfairly subjected you to that focus instead of... [ hmm. he's being wordy, tseng can tell. also embarrassing. ] Instead of recognizing that the way you give and receive trust is part of who you are, and that just because you trust differently than I do doesn't mean you don't trust at all.
[ a pause, and then a wry smile as tseng concludes, ] Your turn. I'm as tired of saying "trust" as I'm sure you are of hearing it.

[Whether it's the same calculus at play or something else, Tseng breaks the silence first- but what Matoba expected to hear certainly wasn't anything like this. The gaze that has pinned intently and unshakably on Tseng lightens in its weight, but the reaction becomes increasingly bemused. By the time Tseng manages to shut himself up, the look fixed upon him is one of bewilderment.]
... Hm. [What else does he say here?? --No, that can wait. The whirring of machinery is growing ever closer; he finally breaks his gaze in order to shift the weight of his eye sidelong, towards the gleaming point of a spike that's encroaching ever closer.] Well, I'm afraid the nature of what I'd like to tell you is quite different, Tseng-san. But vital nonetheless.
I wonder if this will be sufficient to satisfy our captors? If not, it's fine. [He raises a hand to his face- to cup his hand over the eyepatch on the right side of his face.] After all, it's fine if I die here- so long as this right eye remains intact.
My life is of no value without it.
[He pauses, glancing again sidelong, and then upward, as if waiting to hear if the machinery will halt- as the spikes reach and corral he and Tseng together in close quarters.]

he's also not expecting matoba to have anything to say about it, so the fact that he doesn't is just fine. tseng has fulfilled his end of the deal and now it's matoba's turn, even if he chooses subject matter that's quite different than tseng's own. tseng's gaze flicks to the blindfold that covers matoba's right eye, which has long been a source of curiosity for tseng but also a topic about which he never felt it was right to inquire.
and, to be honest, he's not sure that what matoba says answers any questions for him. that his life is of no value without his eye is an interesting assertion, but matoba offers no additional context. ]
I see, [ tseng says, slowly. ] And that has to do with—
[ he cuts himself off sharply when the floor beneath them begins to creak, then swings open to reveal—nothing. whatever question he had about matoba's eye is going to have to wait, it seems, as they plummet into darkness while the spikes converge above them. ]
