【 Thank you for choosing the Golden Peacock, 5-star resort and casino. You are currently registered as a WILDCARD in our system.
Due to a high volume of check-ins, temporary accommodations have been made in our mid-rank suites for all new arrivals. We ask current mid-rank guests to welcome any new arrivals that may temporarily be assigned to their room while we process reservations.
Exciting news! The Phoenix Casino has undergone a renovation. Guests are invited to come enjoy refreshed facilities, games, and lounges. We don't think you'll ever want to leave!
Additionally, the casino will be hosting an upper rank soiree at the end of the month. All guests rank 9 and above are invited to attend. Any +1s of low rank may only attend as a pet or personal attendant. Otherwise, low ranks are not welcome.
We aim to have all guests moved into their suites as soon as possible. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience! 】

[ o-ho. what a dutiful consideration of the question. bakugami would've found an evasion to only be expected—after all, there's nothing humans hate more than being reminded of their own misery. it wouldn't be shocking if the same goes for this human-like creature, but no—this one, although shrinking, actually delivers a response. how delightful. should they praise him for his candidness, or perhaps mock the gesture of obedience?
no—better not to waste what could become a useful resource. after all, that answer is so amazing that bakugami could almost clap and laugh in glee. anywhere they go, there's a populace weighed down by their sorrows and regrets, the same old stories that come down to a formula of helplessness and fear and desperation. ah—if this place is a gambling den, then it's only appropriate to say that it seems their modest bet is paying off.
asato's doubt and mistrust could not be more correctly placed. ]
You poor thing. You must feel terrible.
[ 'If only I could extract those regrets from you now... But until then, it would be a huge help if you could hold on to them.' don't resolve the guilt on your own. don't seek absolution elsewhere. for the joyous sorrow majik, people are at their most useful in the moments desperation drives them to search of an easy release, more than willing to pour all their sorrow into an available receptacle—as if anything in the world would so conveniently and freely offer solace. ]
But I commend you for your honesty! That's not something just anyone could readily admit!
[ that much isn't a lie... they set down the cards, their fingers drumming a brief rhythm. ]
I believe the way this is meant to go dictates that we should swap questions, but... you can elaborate, if you prefer.
( asato had, from a very young age, had obedience literally beaten into him.
even as he sits here, though, he recognizes that this strange individual does not bear the same authority over him as the kiran elder. within the village, the elder’s word had been law—asato had grown up believing that kira and the yuukoku valley surrounding it were the full extent of the world, making the elder its god and any and all interlopers to their land invading demons from beyond. it hadn’t been until one of those “invaders” had looked back at him with striking, fierce eyes that he’d found his belief in that shaken. still… despite asato being a strong and capable touga in his own right, he still maintains a meek and sheepish presence. he folds quickly to pressure, either to acquiesce or to move to avoid entirely. the stranger does pry at the darker shadows in his mind and in his heart, but they’ve also been in his thoughts so often it feels difficult to keep them trapped inside. he’s just not used to dealing with such complex thoughts, feelings, and choices. life in kira had been simple. hard—brutal, even—but simple.
he is not particularly accustomed to consideration or pity. it’s an irony that, as bent on emotion as this creature is, the world that asato comes from is one very nearly drained of it. as ribika slowly slid down the slope towards extinction, they walled themselves off to one another, rarely trusting more than one or two others, if that. the pain of loss, the pain of betrayal, the pain of hunger as one split meager food resources between multiple hungry mouths… it was easier to numb oneself. to feel less, with the hope to survive more.
but was “surviving” truly “living” at that point? konoe had started to teach asato that there was more to life than what he’d been taught.
feel terrible… sure. but he’s dealt with that for a very long time. he has learned to compartmentalize, in his own way.
his expression falls as the stranger continues. he can’t tell if they mean he’s stupid or not… it’s an insult he’s suffered a lot, but. he doesn’t know. something about being asked about something so personal so brazenly—something that’s happened so rarely in his life—had startled him to honesty without really thinking about it. maybe that did make him stupid. )
E…laborate? ( speaking of: the poorly-socialized catboy’s vocabulary isn’t the best. but he generally understands what the stranger means. talk more about it?
after a moment’s thought, he shakes his head. ) There isn’t much more to say. ( a brief pause. ) Just wish… I could find Konoe. That way, I could protect him.
( kagari was a thornier issue. she wouldn’t find any rest with their clan until she killed asato, fixing the mistake so many believed to be hers to begin with, for insisting on raising him. he pushes those thoughts out of mind, the pain of them still too fresh, new, and confusing. )
