ANY CAR IN A STORM
PHOENIX CASINO HALL
WELCOME TO THE NEXT 168 HOURS
Phoenix Casino is a-flutter with activity and packed to the beak with guests. As a famously ever-changing space, the staff would be remiss if they didn't deck the crown jewel of the Golden Peacock out. The casino glitters from top to bottom, shining brighter than diamonds, rubies, sapphires, opals! Party-goers are shiny and glamorous with picture perfect makeup, fluttering gowns, and sharp suits. Card tables are packed and the slot machines are a-ringing as guests play, play, play! Prizes, luxury, booze, attractive people, it's the place that everyone wants to be at.
Those people being dragged inside by some invisible force...? Silly, they were so excited to come that their bodies moved before they realized what was happening. Those are struggles of joy and definitely not the casino's infamous ghost hands dragging unwilling guests to the party at the behest of the house. Look, they're literally hurling their bodies at the card tables with unrestrained glee!
All clocks indicating day hours and night hours have been removed from the casino. Once a guest has entered, their Watch will jam, making it impossible to keep track of the time. You don't need to worry about that tonight.

The character that does join would still receive a small payout for the encounter. Hopefully it was a fun thread regardless!

[ A swordsmen and musician. That hardly surprises Kabru at all. Wuxian was open to questions and happy to engage in some light small talk, and he seemed interested in learning about other people. Kabru has a sense they are quite similar, which could be a good or bad thing. ]
I can't play an instrument, but I do wield a sword. I might not have your dexterity. [ Still, his particular swordsmanship training has a focus on swift kills and assassination, so nimble movements are his specialty. He might do a fairly good job. It's the questions that he's slightly concerned about, not quite wanting to answer anything too personal or sensitive. ]
I'll go first then. [ With that, he picks a safe option, removing one of the cards in the middle. The tower remains well-supported.
What's your type?
That's an easy one. ] I like people of all shapes, sizes and personalities. If I had to choose ... I guess it's pretty cute when they are shy.
[ Could be a good thing. Could be a bad thing. Either way, they'll at least get to know each other right now. Wei Wuxian listens to Kabru speak, considering him a little when he says he's a swordsman. What type, he wonders. And wistfully, he wishes he could fight him, to see his skill in action. But he knows better than to do that these days.
But then the game starts and Kabru is picking a card! Excellent. Wei Wuxian grins and leans forward, watching Kabru as he answers and looking admiring at the answer he gives. Cute when they're shy, huh? ]
That counts me out. [ Just, said with a wink. And then — ] But I'm equally open to all kinds. I'm a sucker for the pretty ones though.
[ Mianmian... Lan Wangji... if they're gorgeous, he'll put out. They've just gotta be hot.
And then he plucks a card from the tower himself, also opting to go near the middle. Still, the tower remains, steady. The card this time reads:
[ but does he like guys with dark skin and curly hair and light eyes
Kabru had a feeling this man was hardly shy. They feel similar to him, more than anything. Since he has an appreciation for all types of people, he doesn't mind that either. ] Like I said, I'm very open. [ Resting in his hand, his elbow against the table, he leans in, peering at Wu Xian. Yup, he is totally open, just saying.
Now, he stares at the card they've picked up. ] I'm not familiar with those terms either.
[ They are both from an age before any kind of internet. One of the staff are helpful enough to explain the meaning to them. ] I see, an extrovert is someone who feels energized when around other people, and an introvert is the opposite.
But oh, oh. That's flirting. He can tell when he's being flirted with, of course. So, there's a bright smile there and he looks pleased as punch at the outcome of the question.
But off they go, moving on to the next. The staff member's explanation is helpful though and so, he tilts his head, considering. Introvert or extrovert... well, he knows Lan Wangji is an introvert for sure. So, what does that make him? An extrovert? ]
I think I'd be an extrovert then. I like meeting new people, talking to them, being around them. I do need my own time alone sometimes but not as much as some people I know.
[ This game is a great way to know people. With how his special interest happens to be people, Kabru is soaking all these tidbits in and committing them to memory. ]
I'm the same. There's nothing I love more than being with people. I also love watching how different people interact with each other. [ Why does he sound like he's putting people under a microscope and observing them? Because he might as well be. ]
I guess it's my turn. To make this more interesting, how about we both answer whatever questions we get?
[ That. Is a little bit of a weird way to phrase that but Wei Wuxian doesn't judge him for it. Just takes it in and keeps it moving. This game is a great way to get to know people though and he's enjoying himself a lot!
Especially since it seems like he and Kabru are on the same wavelength. He likes it, and he's interested to get to know this guy some more.
Which means, he nods eagerly at the suggestion. ]
Only way to make it fair, right? We're still playing the game but if it's an embarrassing question, then at least you won't feel left out.
[ Don't perceive him and how slightly off-putting he can be. ]
Next one ... [ Kabru sounds calmer as he parrots Wuxian, but the interest is there all the same. Carefully, he picks a card from the middle of the tower, easing it carefully from its place.
The card reads: If you could bring someone back to life, who would it be?
Kabru's smile falters after that. He was prepared to answer casual and fun questions, not personal ones such as these. It's not typical of him to tell others too much about himself after all. ] I guess they won't accept anything but a proper answer.
[ The host of the game nods. There's a penalty for lying. Kabru sighs, not particularly wanting to share too much about himself but not really having a choice. ] My birth mother, then ... She deserved better.
[ Wei Wuxian's mouth pulls into a thin line at that. He doesn't want Kabru to feel uncomfortable but the game is also the game and it seems like Kabru is still willing to play it, even with the question being asked.
So, he nods and he listens, looking sympathetic as Kabru comes up with his answer. His birth mother, huh? Wei Wuxian thinks briefly of his own mother, how he wished he knew her, how life would've been so much easier if he had his parents.
But alas, that's not how things worked out and more than that, he thinks of someone else who deserves to be alive. ]
I understand that. For me, it's my shijie. She also deserved better.
[ Then she would've been around to raise Jin Ling, things wouldn't have been so miserable, he wouldn't have died himself. It all goes back to that day. ]
... Let's get a new card.
[ He'll pluck one, a little more from the top instead of the middle, and read it aloud. ]
[ Kabru doesn't know what he means, but it's easy to assume he's talking about a sister of some sort. Wu Xian was nice enough not to ask Kabru any further questions, and so Kabru will return the favour and not probe further. While he's always curious about people, he knows the proper way to act too.
He stares at the new card. ] Looks like they're done with the light and easy questions.
[ He's a bit stumped too. ] To be honest, I've never thought about it. I suppose, I've never seen myself living for that long.
[ It's a depressing thing to say, but he's very casual about it. Kabru has died at least a dozen times in the past and at some point he probably won't be lucky enough to be around a healer. ]
[ He appreciates not having to talk too much about Jiang Yanli's death, not knowing how he'll be able to describe it as being anything other than his own fault. So, he's happy to move on, to keep playing.
There's a wry grin at Kabru's words because yeah, these questions sure keep hitting below the belt. What the hell!
He looks curiously at Kabru at his answer, and then a bit sympathetically. ]
I'm not sure what your life is like beyond here, but there was a point in my life where I wasn't sure what the next day would bring. [ And then he did, in fact, die. ] It can be a little hard to picture the future in that case.
[ . . . ]
... I'd like to settle down, with a friend of mine. Live a simple life together.
[ It can feel a little bit like he doesn't know what the next day will bring, but Kabru doesn't mind it. He chose this life over a comfortable one so he's never complained about it. ]
[ ... Ah! Yeah. Wow, suddenly he's feeling shy, given the opportunity to talk about Lan Wangji. ]
Yeah, him. He's my best friend and my soulmate, there's no one out there that understands me like he does. He's stood by my side during countless hardships and won't ever abandon me!
[ . . . ]
Even if, ah, he's not here right now, which kind of sucks. But it's okay, I can wait.
