PARKING GARAGE
ANY CAR IN A STORM
PHOENIX CASINO HALL
WELCOME TO THE NEXT 168 HOURS
Phoenix Casino is a-flutter with activity and packed to the beak with guests. As a famously ever-changing space, the staff would be remiss if they didn't deck the crown jewel of the Golden Peacock out. The casino glitters from top to bottom, shining brighter than diamonds, rubies, sapphires, opals! Party-goers are shiny and glamorous with picture perfect makeup, fluttering gowns, and sharp suits. Card tables are packed and the slot machines are a-ringing as guests play, play, play! Prizes, luxury, booze, attractive people, it's the place that everyone wants to be at.
Those people being dragged inside by some invisible force...? Silly, they were so excited to come that their bodies moved before they realized what was happening. Those are struggles of joy and definitely not the casino's infamous ghost hands dragging unwilling guests to the party at the behest of the house. Look, they're literally hurling their bodies at the card tables with unrestrained glee!
All clocks indicating day hours and night hours have been removed from the casino. Once a guest has entered, their Watch will jam, making it impossible to keep track of the time. You don't need to worry about that tonight.

( it doesn't escape reira just how kind the girl before her was behaving, shielding her and staying by her side to comfort her. it was far more kindness than someone like her deserved- a thought that filled her mind as she heard her speak. she had ruined things after all, so really it was her fault she was in this predicament.
but she wasn't mature enough to admit that, especially to someone who seemed so willing to be on her side already. she would take that innocent kindness and run with it so selfishly. )
I did just arrive actually, in the trunk of a car.
( that was neither here nor there, but reira hadn't quite realized they weren't being allowed to leave [just yet]. she was actually enjoying herself, well until now. in between tears that still swelled in her eyes, and a few hiccups here and there, she spoke. )
R-really? That sounds awful....I hope you were okay! And you...you're very pretty too.
listen i totally get that as someone who plays a sad space man and this pink chaos woman
[ Fortunately taking the kindness and running with it would be something Hilda would whole heartedly encourage her to do. Especially here. Upon her arrival she had been lucky enough to stumble upon other guests who were in similar situations who had showered her with kindness. It's only fair that she repays it even if she doesn't believe in some karmic force.
News of her arrival definitely has her eyes widening. ]
The trunk of a car?! That's so rude! I can't believe they would do that to someone. If complaining actually did anything around here I'd do it on your behalf.
[ Actually she can considering where they are but... She puts on a brighter smile for her that she hopes is one of reassurance. ]
The muscly seagull lifeguards turned out to be the least of my worries. Why - [ Jokingly she hovers her hands around her face as if worried. ] do I look okay? [ But after a beat the worry dissolves into a flattered smile. ] Thank you. That means a lot coming from someone like you. I'm Hilda, by the way.
( regardless of whether or not her kindness was deserved, at the very least reira was starting to look less distressed and more distracted by what she was being told. with her eyes starting to become dry, she wiped her face a bit more with the underside of her eyes becoming darkened from the ruined mascara. she didn't quite care at this moment about her state, especially when hilda was doing such a good job at hiding her. )
Yeah that was rather terrifying for a moment, I thought I was being kidnapped.
( it didn't take her very long to realize no one knew her or of her fame, which came as a relief. yet as hilda began to play around with her hand, reira couldn't help but smile in return. )
Thank you Hilda, by the way for helping me....I'm Layla Serizawa, but everyone always calls me 'Reira'. How long have you been here anyways?
[ The ruined mascara doesn't go unnoticed by Hilda's watchful eyes. Luckily she's prepared for moments like this - nor is she the type of person to pick an outfit with a little utility to it. Dutifully she nods, an empathic look on her face. ]
You poor thing! To put you through all of that on top of dropping you here without any sort of explanation. Hopefully that's the last time that happens though. [ The exchange of names dispels the annoyance she has on Reira's behalf into a smile. ] I've been here for about six months. It's felt longer some days but it's easier with people you get along with.
[ Finally in the depths of her dress pocket she plucks the handkerchief that had been tucked into the folds of her dress and motions for Reira's face. ]
You have a little smudged make-up. And we can't have that. May I?
( and almost as if she was fully used to having her face touched up, she extended her head out and angled herself perfectly so hilda could get to work. her eyes were still red and strained from the crying, but by now her tears were long dried. distraction from her pain was always something she sought out, so with hilda providing that service to her, she was slowly returning back to a more balanced state.
as the other went to work, she focused on what she had told her. 'six months'?, she thought. it was dawning on her that she probably shouldn't have just gone head first into the pleasures this place was offering. )
Did you arrive all alone? Or did you know anyone else here? I...I think I'm the only person from my home here.
( and by home she meant her bubble- she hadn't quite realized people were brought here from different worlds all together. )
[ The way Reira still is incredibly telling to someone who has a similar ingrained habit. As experienced and as used as Hilda is at being taken care of and attended to, she's also used to doting and caring for others in this way. Her touch is gentle and though she works quick, there's a genuine care to how she works.
Soon enough the mascara that had tracked down her cheeks is gone along with the ones that line beneath her eyes. ]
I thought I was alone.
[ There's a brief pause as some mascara stubbornly refuses to budge. ]
I ended up finding a couple of other people from home that I knew. [ And it's here for the first time that she seems to show a little confusion. ] Though I'm still not entirely sure how it's possible.
( it’s sweet and far more than reira deserved given her recent destructive behaviors back home- yet she couldn’t help but crave the tenderness that came with hilda’s soft touches and the attention she gave to reira. little by little, she was starting to find stability in her mood, slowly shifting from a heart broken mess to just a quite and seemingly sullen from the effects of the drug and such heavy emotions.
and as her face began to become cleaned up, she looked up at the other directly into her eyes as she listened closely. it almost seemed like she was listening to a deeply moving story-
but really she was just trying to show the other some affection in return for her kindness. )
How…how did you find them? Did you run into them or did they reach out to you?
( she’s assuming those advanced looking watches might have something to do with it. )
[ If Hilda notices the effort she doesn't seem to let on being as focused as she is on her task. The smudges of black no longer line Reira's cheeks and after an apparaising once over it looks like Hilda may be done with her job.
But then she reaches into the depths of her pocket for a compact and immediately gets to work again. Thankfully they've got similar enough complexions that what she has on her should help smooth out some of the jarred concealer. ]
Funnily enough I ran into them on separate occasions while I was trying to avoid those lifeguard seagulls.
[ Though she attempts to act aggrieved by it there's a hint of mirth in her voice too as she recalls it. ]
I wasn't actively looking for them. It didn't even occur to me to look for them because we're on opposite sides of a war at home.
( it was a bit of a shock for reira to see hilda immediately begin to touch up her face with makeup, the movement seeming to come naturally to the other. was she ever like that herself? when she thought about it...
she never really had the chance to do that for someone else. she rarely had female friends and her assistant mari was the one who doted on her. the kindness seemed to stir something in her, a desire to return it. perhaps soon she will, but for now she simply seemed to appear more visibly calm, listening intently as the other spoke.
it was then though, when she mentioned war that reira began to look visibly concerned for hilda. )
A war? I haven't heard of a war going on....
( maybe in a western country or two there was a war, but she never paid attention to the news. it was clear though that she had no idea the two were from completely different worlds. )
[ Though they both had similar pink hair, the worlds they were from - at least perhaps the current state of them sounded different - though neither of them realized that they had barely scratched the surface of that truth. War was hardly a pleasant topic nor was it unique to any world. And Hilda, as a general rule of thumb, tried her best to avoid thinking about unpleasant things. On a vanity level it introduced the potential for wrinkles. And on a serious level? It brought a gloomy cloud filled with possibilities that she didn't want to entertain. But even living in ignorant bliss had come to an end with a bone shattering crash, landing her in the situation she finds herself in now.
Despite everything that she keeps at bay her voice betrays none of it. She may as well have been talking about the weather - if there were really weather to be had in here that was real. ]
I was.
[ But as soon as she admits it she offers Reira a kind smile, almost teasing, as she continues to fix her makeup. ]
But I'd be surprised if you had heard about the war I was in before arriving. I don't think you're from Fodlan. Unless you are in which case we'll have to try and remember one another when we return.
( it doesn’t take much for reira to pick up on that strangeness that came with how hilda spoke on about the war with such a calm and gentle voice. almost as if she weren’t speaking about something possibly tragic and it finally dawned on her that perhaps the other was doing it to keep her from worrying.
or perhaps they were a lot more similar than she initially thought. reira was the kind of person to hide from her emotions and worrisome thoughts, often casually joking about her woes or acting dramatic when deep inside the waves of her emotions were drowning her.
yet she had little strength or much of a clear mind to comment on that. the effect of the drug was now gone, but the aftermath- the blurred vision, mental fog all remained. so she just looked up at the other with an equally kind smile but a shocked gaze in her eyes as she tended to her makeup. )
Fodlan? No, sorry I’m from a place called ‘Japan’, but I’m starting to think that there aren’t many here from my world. Are you….safe here?
( she did mention running into others from her world here, and perhaps they weren’t friends, or maybe they were. whatever was the truth, it was clear reira was starting to become worried and mindful of the girl before her. )
[ It would be stranger if the strangeness hadn't been picked up on. No one should be talking about war in such a dethatched way like it isn't something truly awful. But she'd had no other way to cope. How else was she supposed to keep going? And breaking out into tears every fight wasn't going to help keep her - or anyone she cared about - alive.
That Reira doesn't question her further about it is a small blessing. ]
Japan. [ The name rolls over her tongue as she leans back a little to inspect her handiwork with a thoughtful look on her face. ] You know, I think there might be a couple of other people here who are from there too, so you might not be as alone as you think.
[ But as soon as that realization dawns on her, Reira's question has her pausing again. ]
Safe? Oh. [ Confusion dissolves again into a smile before she offers the compact to Reira for her approval. ] I am. Though we're on different sides of the war I guess you could say we've come to a...truce of some kind. At least while we're here. Fighting is so much effort and it's not like it would do any of us any good here.
( that way of thinking was something reira wish she was strong enough to do. she did her best to push aside her pain, but it was times like these were her feelings would become far too much and soon she was letting it all spill out in one burst-
only to recover, rinse and repeat. it wasn't healthy by any means, but the more she was surrounded by others, the less likely it was to happen. for now though her focus was solely on hilda because it allowed her to recover from her own 'little' moment. as the compact came into her hands, she nodded in approval and reached out to hold hilda's hand. with the most empathetic face she could muster, she leaned in and hugged the girl unexpectedly. )
You've been through so much and yet you've helped me. I'm so grateful really-
Thank you Hilda, and I'm glad to hear you're okay here for now.
[ There wasn't anything wrong with letting yourself feel things. There were some nights she still went to sleep crying. War had dulled that part of her that cried but not to the point where she didn't allow herself to feel; she'd seen the effects of being numb to things and that wasn't ideal either.
But war seems a far and away thing now that she's been here several months. Each passing day puts more space between her and the battlefield and softening the callouses on her palms. This is what she'd rather use her hands for, she thinks as Reira gives a nod of approval for an impromptu fix.
The hug coupled with her sweet words however catch her completely off guard. ]
What -
[ Colour rises to the apples of her cheeks before she's quick to return Reira's hug with a laugh. ]
Don't be silly, Reira! I wouldn't want to walk around with messy makeup for a place that doesn't deserve to see me at my worst. How could I leave you in the same position?
[ And when they do pull back from the hug she gathers Reira's hands in hers, giving her a reassuring squeeze. ]
If there's anything you need while we're here, I'll do what I can to help you even if it's just keeping you company. That is, if you want that.
( she hated that she ended up in that position herself, crying and to be found by hilda in such a mess. yet her kindness made her stronger- it was in between the hug and her words that she made herself a promise that she would be like hilda and not allow anyone to see her at a low point. she was always such a fickle person, terrified of being alone yet never committing herself to anything. it was now though that she made a resolve to commit to never using that drug again and never putting hilda in this spot.
clearly they both had their woes and yet something in her made her want to protect the other, or at the very least pay her back somehow. then she said those kind words...that nearly made reira's heart tighten up and beat right out of her chest. )
I...
( she wasn't sure what to say to such a kind offer. didn't she just make up her mind that she would help hilda somehow? yet the words were far too sweet. she was done for. )
Would love your company anytime. Hopefully I don't end up in the dumps here, but if you ever want me just give me a ring. I should probably find some place to rest for now before I end up passing out in your arms.
[ Showing someone your vulnerabilities regardless of the circumstances isn't easy for anyone - and that's something that Hilda can relate to so deeply. Though instead of worrying about seeing people her really cry, it was the deeper feelings Hilda worried about others seeing.
The crocodile tears, the silly worries and whining that she tended to err towards all had a sliver of truth to them because she didn't want to do it. But they were easy for her to show and express because in many ways it had become a habit after years of being doted upon.
It was easy to be a cry baby and a delicate flower because that's what people expected of her. Anything less than shallow was when it became terrifying. But there isn't a single thought about that here. Reira's wellbeing after a harrowing experience is what matters the most. ]
I don't mind coming with you. I don't mind a party but to be honest I'm exhausted. [ A shapely leg come peeking out from the slit in her dress as she wiggles her foot. ] And walking around in these heels has been great but even my own feet are getting tired.
[ She stands, extending a hand out towards her with a warm smile, the dusting of the blush from before still colouring her cheeks. ]
I heard there's a women's only lounge. We'll probably be safe to rest in there.
( truly they were so similar in many ways and soon reira would come to find that out and realize what a kind person hilda was in the end. she wanted nothing more than to repay the favor at some point, to comfort her just as she had comforted her—
after all, she was no stranger to cruelty. the other could have easily allowed her to wallow in her despair all on her own or worst, mock her for it. it was strange but when reira thought about it, when was the last time anyone had this level of kindness for her? back home she was viewed as a simple machine to sing and to provide for her band, to keep things afloat and her own desires were neglected. it was then that she sought toxic outlets.
