The fact that Durge will have to get down by people's feet to look is exactly why Edward did it, he knows he can't win against magic like this but that doesn't mean he's going to make anything easy.
As is evident when Edward finally falls forward onto the floor, unconscious, and Durge goes into his pocket for the lock. It's there but has been closed back up so is useless unless he manages to find the key and figure out the sequence.
