[ There's the slightest of falters that runs through the hero's body when she calls that name, and if Aerith wasn't sure before, she knows now. Zack isโ€”

He calls for her in return, and very suddenly, she's not sure how she feels. It's a complex mess of emotions that strikes her all at once, a suddenness to their swell that would have even the most practiced of therapeutic practioners concerned for her mental state.

Anger and grief, of course, come foremost, as they always do when she thinks of him. The man she loved so dearly disappeared on her, and then he diedโ€”but he's also here, in this resort, and he's clearly alive, and even if that means he's come here from a different time in his past to her, there's some relief, some real joy to it.

But even that joy comes hand in hand with the concern that he's found himself here, that he's trapped in this resort, forced to bend hismelf to its twisted whims...

And then there's guilt. Sickening, twisting. He's been gone for years, dead for months, of course she was going to move onโ€”and yet here's here and he's alive... so, how could she have moved on? How could she have given her first timeโ€”and so many times sinceโ€”

Ugh. No. She needs to put that thought aside, right now. There wasn't anything she could do about that, and she knows it. And right nowโ€”

(There's confusion, too. Insidious, heart-gripping. Whispering her love for him even as she's been longing for another..)

โ€”But right now, none of that matters, because he's given up on the script altogether, he's running for her, and the flowers in this world may not speak to her, but in that instant she knows what he means to do, not to mention how and why it won't work, and sheโ€” ]

Zack, noโ€”

[ He reaches her, and of course the chains don't give, and the knight continues to bear down on him, and "Cut!!!!" the director yells in exasperation, and Aerith shakes her head, fondness and concern alike in her eyes as she looks up at him.

(And how she wishes she could reach out, touch his face, but her hands are bound tight...) ]

I'll explain everything later, [ she whispers instead, even as the director starts to go on a rant about following the script and not playing the damn hero. ] But Zack... you know what kind of place this is, don't you? I'm not really a captive or anything, but.. there's only one way I'm getting out of these, you know? That's how they were designed...

[ That's what they agreed to when they put their names on the dotted line of a movie called "FUCK THE PRINCESS: ADVENTURER'S VIRGINITY GIVEN ON HEROIC MISSION, anyway. ]
