It's hard to imagine building a relationship with a bunch of pixelated blocks, but also, he's gotten the general sense that Akira's from a time period where video games are far more advanced. It's not hard to imagine that those highly advanced graphics are available to play even at home, cutting the need for people to go to the arcade.
It's also probably not out of the question that the casino sells a video game system like that in one of the shops. He just... hasn't looked around too much, partly because his room is small and there's not much space for anything, but also--]
