He did. But it was because God set him an impossible task. When God asked both of them for their finest offerings, Abel offered up a newborn lamb, and Cain offered up his finest crops. But God only had an interest in blood, and so Cain received no praise for his efforts. Or any acknowledgement, even.

[And he can't imagine that. To do your best only to be spurned by someone who you love before all else. Someone who is supposed to love you unconditionally.]

I'm not saying what Cain did was right, but God who was supposed to be all knowing, set him up, and then cursed him for his reaction instead of just telling him he did good too.
