getting close enough to see (a rough task with the mewing gulls all around) makes it clear: a challenge of strength has been issued. an impromptu flexoff. tickets to the gun show. a swolegull is striking poses, flexing and making shrill calls, and in front of him-

well. a silent, blank-faced woman is mirroring his poses, to the amazement and delight of the still-gathering crowd. what has caught their attention so? is it her toned, slender figure? the gold-lined scarring under her top? her audacity in merely issuing this challenge? or is she simply the first person to play along with a bunch of birds for this long?
