You could call Luminatics something akin to energy that allows magic, yes. Aurorians can use Lumina naturally from birth, and their origins aren't well-understood. They allow us to protect ourselves and others from the Eclipsites—creatures who arrived with the eclipses. [which maybe implies something about Aurorians, but he doesn't think that's important anyway.]

I'm no geneticist, so I can't tell you what, more than "being an Aurorian," allows one to have enough sensitivity to use Lumina. Birth also defines the type of Lumina you use. And—there's no one here worth knowing, at least.
